Speaker of Edo state House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Adjoto Kabiru has said that the House will do its best to ensure that business thrive in a Conducive atmosphere in the State capital, as a way of improving the economy of the State.
Rt. Hon. Adjoto Kabiru gave this assurance when the executive of Traders Welfare Union of Nigeria, Edo State chapter protested to the House over what they called extortion by Landlords and store owners who capitalized on the recent bounding of street trading to exploit the common traders in the state.
The Hon. Speaker who advised the protesting traders to go about their normal activities peacefully, promised to investigate issue surrounding the propose market in Benin City based on the petition submitted by the traders union.
Speaking earlier, the chairman of the traders, Mr Lucky Orukpe, who observed that his union was in support of bounding street trading in the metropolis, stress that members of the union are experiencing untold hardship in the hand of Landlords and shop owners who now exploit them for selfish gains.
He lamented that the union members seemed to have lost out in a promise of the building of International Market at Uteh Community in Benin City, which would have accommodated over 2500 members of the union by the ministry of commerce and industry which later dropped the idea.
He appealed to the House to investigate the activities of the exploitative landlords and shop owners as well as the issue of the International Market with a view to ameliorating their plight.
